2. Enter search terms in the text box and press enter to search the active document. Text that matches the search terms will be highlighted:

- If search terms are entered in the all of these words text box, then the results will include only text strings that contain all the entered search terms.

- If search terms are entered in the any of these words text box, then the results will include text strings that contain any of the entered search terms.

- If search terms are entered in the none of these words text box, then the results will exclude text strings that contain any of the entered search terms.

Click the Options button to view/select further search variables:

• Select Case Sensitive to include the case of search terms in the search.
• Select Whole Words to return only whole words.
• Select Ignore Diacritics to ignore accents, cedillas and other similar symbols in the search.
• Select Include Page Text to include text on pages of the document in the search.
• Select Include Bookmarks to include bookmark names in the search.
• Select Include Comments to include comment text in the search.
• Select Form Fields to include form field text in the search.
• Select Include External Links to include links to external locations/files in the search.
• Select Include Attachments to include embedded documents in the search.
• Select Include DocumentInfo to include document metadata/information in the search.
• Select Pre-Estimate Search in Folder to have PDF-XChange Editor perform a folder count prior to the search. This facilitates the correct search progress in the progress bar when searches take place.
• Select Look in Sub-Folders to include all directory subfolders in the search.
• Select Proximity to determine the proximity of returned results. The options are:

- Only Adjacent Words.

- Words from the Same Paragraph.

- Words from the Same Page.

I have a text phrase (actually, several phases) that I use frequently in multiple applications. I'd like to create a keyboard shortcut or hotkey that will paste this text phrase wherever I have placed my cursor in a text input field (Apple Mail, Microsoft Word, TextEdit, TextWrangler, browser windows, etc.) rather than constantly copying and pasting from a sticky note.

I'd prefer not to have to buy any apps (seems like Keyboard Maestro has this functionality but seems silly to pay $36 just for this), though free apps would be fine. Tried looking under System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts but no obvious solution, and all AppleScripts I found seem to not translate properly for me. I've found other solutions for this problem on this forum for Windows users (like AutoHotKey) but none for Mac users.

You can trigger this with a keyboard shortcut by creating a new Quick Action (previously called Service) in Automator. Set it to receive No Input, and then drag Run AppleScript from the left pane to the right.

It should look like this:

AFAIK it's Shareware. So it's not actually free but the demo mode is not timelimited.

I just purchased MS Office 2013. Previously I used 2010. Unfortunately, I wasn't paying attention to what I changed it from, or to, as I was just clicking away and hoping for the best. I went back into layout to see if I could figure it out. A couple times when I chose the text wrapping options 'tight' or 'square' it had the same effect of not allowing me to edit the text. Sorry I can't fully explain but maybe if you change whatever text wrapping option you currently have, it'll work. I also clicked on the options 'move with text' and 'fix position on page' so you could try those also. All the best to everyone having this problem!

The icons to the left of the options show which way the text will rotate. The text is rotated in the chosen direction in the selected cells.

Does anyone happen to know if there is a token I can add to my csv for a certain field so Excel doesn't try to convert it to a date?

I'm trying to write a .csv file from my application and one of the values happens to look enough like a date that Excel is automatically converting it from text to a date. I've tried putting all of my text fields (including the one that looks like a date) within double quotes, but that has no effect.

I have found that putting an '=' before the double quotes will accomplish what you want. It forces the data to be text.

eg. ='2008-10-03',='more text'

EDIT (according to other posts): because of the Excel 2007 bug noted by Jeffiekins one should use the solution proposed by Andrew: '='2008-10-03''

I know this is an old question, but the problem is not going away soon. CSV files are easy to generate from most programming languages, rather small, human-readable in a crunch with a plain text editor, and ubiquitous.

The problem is not only with dates in text fields, but anything numeric also gets converted from text to numbers. A couple of examples where this is problematic:

• ZIP/postal codes
• telephone numbers
• government ID numbers

which sometimes can start with one or more zeroes (0), which get thrown away when converted to numeric. Or the value contains characters that can be confused with mathematical operators (as in dates: /, -).

Two cases that I can think of that the 'prepending =' solution, as mentioned previously, might not be ideal is

• where the file might be imported into a program other than MS Excel (MS Word's Mail Merge function comes to mind),
• where human-readability might be important.

If one pre/appends a non-numeric and/or non-date character in the value, the value will be recognized as text and not converted. A non-printing character would be good as it will not alter the displayed value. However, the plain old space character (s, ASCII 32) doesn't work for this as it gets chopped off by Excel and then the value still gets converted. But there are various other printing and non-printing space characters that will work well. The easiest however is to append (add after) the simple tab character (t, ASCII 9).

Benefits of this approach:

• Available from keyboard or with an easy-to-remember ASCII code (9),
• It doesn't bother the importation,
• Normally does not bother Mail Merge results (depending on the template layout - but normally it just adds a wide space at the end of a line). (If this is however a problem, look at other characters e.g. the zero-width space (ZWSP, Unicode U+200B)

I had a similar problem and this is the workaround that helped me without having to edit the csv file contents:

If you have the flexibility to name the file something other than '.csv', you can name it with a '.txt' extension, such as 'Myfile.txt' or 'Myfile.csv.txt'. Then when you open it in Excel (not by drag and drop, but using File->Open or the Most Recently Used files list), Excel will provide you with a 'Text Import Wizard'.

In the first page of the wizard, choose 'Delimited' for the file type.

In the second page of the wizard choose ',' as the delimiter and also choose the text qualifier if you have surrounded your values by quotes

In the third page, select every column individually and assign each the type 'Text' instead of 'General' to stop Excel from messing with your data.

WARNING: Excel '07 (at least) has a(nother) bug: if there's a comma in the contents of a field, it doesn't parse the ='field, contents' correctly, but rather puts everything after the comma into the following field, regardless of the quotation marks.

The only workaround I've found that works is to eliminate the = when the field contents include a comma.

This may mean that there are some fields that are impossible to represent exactly 'right' in Excel, but by now I trust no-one is too surprised.

Still an issue in Microsoft Office 2016 release, rather disturbing for those of us working with gene names such as MARC1, MARCH1, SEPT1 etc. The solution I've found to be the most practical after generating a '.csv' file in R, that will then be opened/shared with Excel users:

1. Open the CSV file as text (notepad)
2. Copy it (ctrl+a, ctrl+c).
3. Paste it in a new excel sheet -it will all paste in one column as long text strings.
4. Choose/select this column.
5. Go to Data- 'Text to columns..', on the window opened choose 'delimited' (next). Check that 'comma' is marked (marking it will already show the separation of the data to columns below) (next), in this window you can choose the column you want and mark it as text (instead of general) (Finish).

Here is the simple method we use at work here when generating the csv file in the first place, it does change the values a bit so it is not suitable in all applications:

Prepend a space to all values in the csv

This space will get stripped off by excel from numbers such as ' 1',' 2.3' and ' -2.9e4' but will remain on dates like ' 01/10/1993' and booleans like ' TRUE', stopping them being converted into excel's internal data types.

It also stops double quotes being zapped on read in, so a foolproof way of making text in a csv remain unchanged by excel EVEN IF is some text like '3.1415' is to surround it with double quotes AND prepend the whole string with a space, i.e. (using single quotes to show what you would type) ' '3.1415'. Then in excel you always have the original string, except it is surrounded by double quotes and prepended by a space so you need to account for those in any formulas etc.

This is a only way I know how to accomplish this without messing inside the file itself. As usual with Excel, I learned this by beating my head on the desk for hours.

Change the .csv file extension to .txt; this will stop Excel from auto-converting the file when it's opened. Here's how I do it: open Excel to a blank worksheet, close the blank sheet, then File => Open and choose your file with the .txt extension. This forces Excel to open the 'Text Import Wizard' where it'll ask you questions about how you want it to interpret the file. First you choose your delimiter (comma, tab, etc..), then (here's the important part) you choose a set columns of columns and select the formatting. If you want exactly what's in the file then choose 'Text' and Excel will display just what's between the delimiters.

The only proper solution that worked for me (and also without modifying the CSV).

Excel 2010:

1. Create new workbook
2. Data > From Text > Select your CSV file
3. In the popup, choose 'Delimited' radio button, then click 'Next >'
4. Delimiters checkboxes: tick only 'Comma' and uncheck the other options, then click 'Next >'
5. In the 'Data preview', scroll to the far right, then hold shift and click on the last column (this will select all columns). Now in the 'Column data format' select the radio button 'Text', then click 'Finish'.

Excel office365: (client version)

1. Create new workbook
2. Data > From Text/CSV > Select your CSV file
3. Data type detection > do not detect

Note: Excel office365 (web version), as I'm writing this, you will not be able to do that.

None of the solutions offered here is a good solution. It may work for individual cases, but only if you're in control of the final display. Take my example: my work produces list of products they sell to retail. This is in CSV format and contain part-codes, some of them start with zero's, set by manufacturers (not under our control). Take away the leading zeroes and you may actually match another product. Retail customers want the list in CSV format because of back-end processing programs, that are also out of our control and different per customer, so we cannot change the format of the CSV files. And many customers are not really computer savvy. Its not the Excel. Windows does recognize the formula, the data as a date and autocorrects. You have to change the Windows settings.

'Control Panel' (-> 'Switch to Classic View') -> 'Regional and LanguageOptions' -> tab 'Regional Options' -> 'Customize..' -> tab 'Numbers' -> Andthen change the symbols according to what you want.

It will work on your computer, if these settings are not changed for example on your customers' computer they will see dates instead of data.

I write this vbscipt to create another CSV file. The new CSV file will have a space in font of each field, so excel will understand it as text.

So you create a .vbs file with the code below (for example Modify_CSV.vbs), save and close it. Drag and Drop your original file to your vbscript file. It will create a new file with 'SPACE_ADDED' to file name in the same location.

Without modifying your csv file you can:

1. Change the excel Format Cells option to 'text'
2. Then using the 'Text Import Wizard' to define the csv cells.
3. Once imported delete that data
4. then just paste as plain text

excel will properly format and separate your csv cells as text formatted ignoring auto date formats.

I know this is an old thread. For the ones like me, who still have this problem using office 2013 via powershell com object can use the opentext method. The problem is that this method has many arguments, that are sometimes mutual exclusive. To resolve this issue you can use the invoke-namedparameter method introduced in this post.An example would be

Unfortunately I just discovered that this method somehow breaks the csv parsing when cells contain linebreaks. This is supported by csv but microsofts implementation seems to be bugged.Also it did somehow not detect german specific chars. Giving it the correct culture did not change this behaveiour. All files (csv and script) are saved with utf8 encoding. First I wrote the following code to insert the csv cell by cell.

But this is extremly slow, which is why i looked for an alternative. Appearently Excel allows you to set the values of a range of cells with a matrix. So i used the algorithm in this blog to transform the csv in a multiarray.

You can use above code as is it should convert any csvs into excel. Just change the path to the csv and the delimiter character at the bottom.

In my case, 'Sept8' in a csv file generated using R was converted into '8-Sept' by Excel 2013. The problem was solved by using write.xlsx2() function in the xlsx package to generate the output file in xlsx format, which can be loaded by Excel without unwanted conversion. So, if you are given a csv file, you can try loading it into R and converting it into xlsx using the write.xlsx2() function.

1. Open the data in Excel
2. Set the format of the column with incorrect data to Text (Format > Cells > Number > Text)
3. Load the .csv into Google Drive, and open it with Google Sheets

Okay found a simple way to do this in Excel 2003 through 2007. Open a blank xls workbook. Then go to Data menu, import external data. Select your csv file. Go through the wizard and then in 'column data format' select any column that needs to be forced to 'text'. This will import that entire column as a text format preventing Excel from trying to treat any specific cells as a date.

This issue is still present in Mac Office 2011 and Office 2013, I cannot prevent it happening. It seems such a basic thing.

In my case I had values such as '1 - 2' & '7 - 12' within the CSV enclosed correctly within inverted commas, this automatically converts to a date within excel, if you try subsequently convert it to just plain text you would get a number representation of the date such as 43768. Additionally it reformats large numbers found in barcodes and EAN numbers to 123E+ numbers again which cannot be converted back.

I have found that Google Drive's Google Sheets doesnt convert the numbers to dates. The barcodes do have commas in them every 3 characters but these are easily removed. It handles CSVs really well especially when dealing with MAC / Windows CSVs.

Might save someone sometime.

EASIEST SOLUTIONI just figured this out today.

• Open in Word
• Replace all hyphens with en dashes
• Save and Close
• Open in Excel

Once you are done editing, you can always open it back up in Word again to replace the en dashes with hyphens again.

I do this for credit card numbers which keep converting to scientific notation: I end up importing my .csv into Google Sheets. The import options now allow to disable automatic formatting of numeric values. I set any sensitive columns to Plain Text and download as xlsx.

It's a terrible workflow, but at least my values are left the way they should be.

I made this vba macro which basically formats the output range as text before pasting the numbers. Works perfect for me when i want to paste values such as 8/11, 23/6, 1/3 etc. without Excel interpreting them as dates.

I'm very interested in knowing if this works for other people as well. I've been looking for a solution to this problem for a while, but I haven't seen a quick vba solution to it before which didn't include inserting ' in front of the input text. This code retains the data in its original form.

If you put an inverted comma at the start of the field, it will be interpreted as text.

Example:25/12/2008 becomes '25/12/2008

You are also able to select the field type when importing.

An alternate method:

Convert the format of the column you want to change to 'Text'. Select all the cells you want to preserve, copy. Without deselecting those columns, click 'Edit > Paste Special > As values'

Save as CSV. Note that this has to be the last thing you do to the file because when you reopen it, it will format itself as dates since cell formats cannot be saved in CSV files.

Tips for Using Voice Recognition Software

Dictation apps are impressive, but they aren't perfect. You do need to change how you speak a little for them to work well. Keep these pointers in mind when dictating text.

1. Speak like a newscaster. With a dictation app, you need to enunciate clearly, but you shouldn't talk like a robot. Speaking like a newscaster is about where you need to be.

2. Punctuate. When you dictate, you have to say each period, comma, question mark, and so forth.

If you plan to dictate more than a few sentences, switch to an external microphone for better accuracy. Earbuds that have a mic on the cord will do. For more advanced uses, you'll get the best results by investing in a higher quality mic.

The options for microphones used for dictation fall into three broad categories: wired headsets, wireless headsets, and desktop microphones.

Among wired headsets, look for a device that puts the microphone close to your mouth, which minimizes the amount of ambient noise it picks up. Look no further than your Mac, iPhone, or iPad for one of the best dictations tools. Apple's built-in Dictation feature, powered by Siri (we'd be unsurprised if the two merged one day), ships as part of Apple's desktop and mobile operating systems. On iOS devices, you use it by pressing the microphone icon on the stock keyboard. On desktop, you turn it on by going to System Preferences > Keyboard > Dictation and then use a keyboard shortcut to activate it in your app.

By default, Apple Dictation requires the internet to work and has a time limit of about 30 seconds for each smattering of speech. Dictation.io is a free website that lets you turn your speech to text without downloading or installing anything. You need an internet connection to use it because your speech gets processed through Google's servers in real time. In testing, it was reasonably accurate, with a need for cleanup in punctuation and capitalization in particular. There's no time limit, though you may need to reload the page if a pesky ad appears over the controls for switching the microphone between listening and stop mode.

Dictation.io has a list of preferred words for inserting punctuation and special characters, though it didn't always function flawlessly. For example, to insert a period, you can say, 'full stop,' which the app confused with 'stop listening,' the command to turn off the mic.

Everything runs in the browser with Dictation.io, so you'll have to move your text to do anything with it. When you finish dictation, you can copy and paste your work, export to a .txt file, tweet it, email it, or print it from the app. While the developer notes that your voice isn't being recorded or stored anywhere, it's worth mentioning that the site has no terms of service or privacy statement. It's a good tool when you need to dictate once here or there, or if you're looking for a hard-to-find language, as this app supports 67, including many Asian languages.

Gboard (Android, iOS)

Best free mobile dictation tool without time limits

Gboard, available for both Android and iOS, is a powerful keyboard app that includes a dictation tool. Press and hold the spacebar, and you can dictate at length. Gboard transcribes everything you say in real time and without a time limit, although you need an internet connection to use it.

Be warned that Gboard is fast. It will cut you off if you take too long of a breath or even pause for a moment. Its speed is both its strength and its weakness, as it scored the lowest in accuracy of all our apps likely because it forces the speaker to rush through the text.

Accuracy: In transcribing a 200-word passage, Gboard flubbed about 20 percent of it.

Text Tool For Machining

Recommendation: Gboard works fast, but it pushes you to speak fast, too, which may not be your cup of tea. In getting the hang of it, I found myself rushing and not breathing at a natural rhythm. Use Gboard when you need speed, and when you're dictating a few short ideas at a time.

Similar to Dragon, Google Docs Voice Typing gives you plenty of voice commands for formatting, editing, and navigating the page as you write. For example, you can say 'create bulleted list,' 'select word,' or 'go to end of paragraph.' In our testing, Voice Typing held up well with a natural speaking pace. It's a solid option if you work primarily in Google Docs and are looking for free dictation software.

Recommendation: Voice Typing is an incredibly helpful tool if you use Google Docs avidly, but it doesn't work anywhere else. That said, it's one of the only free voice dictation apps that gives you a wide range of commands for editing and formatting.

ListNote Speech-to-Text Notes is one of the most popular speech recognition apps for Android in the Google Play store, with more than 26,000 downloads.

It combines the classic notepad functionality with voice dictation, using your phone's built-in Google Voice Search to turn voice to text while recording the audio at the same time. The app saves each recording as a searchable note that you can categorize and color code. You can share these notes via email, text, and to any other supported app you have installed, as well as play the recorded audio while reading the transcribed text to check it.

ListNote also offers a handful of unique features, like the 'Time to Breathe' option that lets you choose how long to wait before stopping speech input. It offers password protection as well, plus backup and encryption options.

Price: Free

Accuracy: In using ListNote to transcribe a 200-word passage, the app had six small errors that were easy to correct, but missed a few words in a row in three places.

Recommendation: On Android, ListNote is a speedy text-to-speech app that doesn't have a time limit. It's a good option if you need a free app that you can use quickly and easily, and if you don't mind making a few corrections when finished.

Languages: Supports all languages offered in Google's dictation services (see Gboard entry).

If you're looking for a similar option on Windows and iOS, you can use the Microsoft OneNote mobile app to record your voice, and then switch to the Window app to run an Audio Search to find words in it. The app doesn't transcribe the full text, however.

Speech Recogniser (iOS)

Best dictation app for translating text into another language

Speech Recogniser is a dictation powerhouse. You can use it to not only dictate but also translate text into more than 26 languages. The app also lets you post directly to Facebook or Twitter, copy your transcribed text to other apps, and send text via email.

Once you install and open Speech Recogniser, you choose a source language on the home screen and tap the start button to activate the dictation. When you're done, a new screen appears with your text. You can then translate, share, or even playback your recording.

It's a quick way to jot down transcribed notes and even translate them into another language when you need.

Price: Free

Accuracy: Out of 200 words, Speech Recogniser had four inaccuracies.

If you use a Windows 10 device, you're probably already familiar with Cortana, the AI voice recognition assistant from Microsoft. Cortana works in tandem with another tool called Windows 10 Speech Recognition, which is used for dictation and operating your device.

Using either a hotkey (Windows logo button + h) or a voice command, you can start dictating continuously in supported apps. In testing, dictation worked without a hitch in Notepad and Word, two apps made by Microsoft, but not at all in Evernote or Google Docs. Make sure the apps you want to use are supported before investing too much time in this tool.

Speech Recognition uses two different on-screen interfaces, depending on how what you're doing. There's one interface for dictation (shown above) and a separate one for voice commands, like opening programs and scrolling pages.

Speech Recognition improves the more you use it. You can optionally allow Windows to scan your typed documents to get a better sense of your linguistic choices.

As mentioned, Cortana is the other piece of the Windows speech recognition puzzle. Saying, 'Hey, Cortana,' wakes up this AI assistant, and you can ask it to search online, open apps, save short notes, and look up directions.

Accuracy: In transcribing 250 words, Windows Speech Recogniser had 12 errors. More than half were related to capitalization, and two were incorrect words.

Recommendation: Windows Speech Recognition and Cortana together offer a compelling dictation package for people who run Windows and use Microsoft apps. If you compose in many apps not made by Microsoft, you may want to look for another option, however.

Languages: Not counting different dialects separately, Windows Speech Recognition supports eight languages: Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese (Brazilian only), and Spanish.

Is Voice Dictation for You?

Once you become experienced with it, a dictation tool can speed up your writing, potentially making you more productive. It lets you multitask, and some people find it helps them generate ideas rather than get stuck on revising and editing. Dictation software can be a necessary tool for people with accessibility issues or who are trying to prevent repetitive stress syndrome from typing, too.

Dictation is not always right for every task, however. It's ideal for writing speeches and spoken remarks. It turns list-making into an afterthought. But depending on what kind of writer you are and what you're producing, typing with your fingers may be your preferred route.

If you find yourself diving headfirst into dictation and using some features to edit or control your computer using your voice, you may want to invest in top-of-the-line software, such as Dragon by Nuance. Or, you may want to spend a half hour every day practicing and learning to use the tools that come with your operating system. If you're still dabbling, try a free dictation tool that's easily accessible, such as the one that came pre-installed on your smartphone.

As you become more comfortable with voice recognition technology, you can use it for anything you like on whatever device you have at hand. You just might get hooked.
